SITA UK has awarded a multi-million pound contract for improvement work on eight Household Waste Recovery Centres (HWRCs) in Northumberland. Lumsden & Carroll Construction, based in County Durham, has been awarded the £4.5million contract for work that will be undertaken over the next twelve months.
These works are part of a massive £12million investment programme that in total will see two new HWRCs built and eleven more refurbished.
SITA UK is the waste management specialist chosen by Northumberland County Council as its partner for its long-term private finance initiative (PFI) contract for waste services. This contract is backed by £40.8million of government funding and involves a total investment of £90million for essential new and improved facilities across the county.
Andy Stokes, SITA UK’s Project Director for the Northumberland PFI project said: “We are extremely pleased to announce that Lumsden & Carroll Construction has been successful in bidding for a substantial element of the improvement work at HWRCs across the county. We look forward to working with them to provide enhanced recycling facilities for the people of Northumberland.
“SITA UK and the county council have ambitious targets that will see 40% of the county’s household waste recycled by 2010. This will make Northumberland one of the ‘greenest’ counties for waste management in the UK.
“To meet these targets it is essential that we have the best possible infrastructure in place to make it easy and convenient for the residents of Northumberland to recycle.”
Bill McCafferty, Business Development Director at Lumsden & Carroll Construction added:
“I am delighted that we have been chosen to handle the upgrading and expansion of eight HWRCs and that we can play our part in the county’s recycling success story. We look forward to working closely with the SITA UK to successfully deliver these key environmental facilities for the residents of Northumberland."
The eight HWRCs included in the contract are: Allendale, Bebside, Kirkley West Thorn, Haltwhistle, Morpeth, North Sunderland, Prudhoe and Wooler. The first sites that Lumsden & Carroll will work on are Bebside and Prudhoe, starting Monday 14 January. These sites will need to close temporarily to allow work to proceed, and SITA UK will ensure that customers get advance warning and information about alternative facilities.
